I captured these pictures by using the Canon SX510. For my home brief, i based this project around my hobbies which in turn helps to tell a story about me. From looking at these pictures you will be able to see that i like to game, play the guitar be social and cook. I took a picture of my play station 4 controller to represent a hobby i love to do. I thought this looked good as it looks a bit worn and shows that i have been doing this for a number of years.

i wanted these pictures to show some form of depth of field. a good example of this the picture of the guitar. I wanted the neck of the guitar to be out of focus and the body to be in focus, this is because to me the most important part of the guitar is the body, the part that you strum to make the all important sound. As you will be able to see as well, the guitar has picked up some dust over the years. That’s because it has been passed down the family tree from my granddad to me.

For the picture with the bottle, i wanted to give the impression of a party atmosphere. By taking a picture inside the bottle and looking out the other it also gives that blurry effect, just like when you’re drunk. I placed the balloon next to the bottle just to further emphasize that it was from the aftermath of a party.

As the theme is all about home, i felt it would be right not to edit the next 3 pictures as i wanted it to have a more authentic look. As if you was flicking through old family photos. As a hobby i like to cook, so i thought id take a picture of my cook book. I opened the book to a page with a label on just to give that in use feel.

To further represent my home, i took a picture of the city i currently live in, Lincoln. I took this picture along a route i take daily to my university. This is an unedited picture as i wanted to show Lincoln how it truly is. I didn’t want it to look like it was the middle of summer all sunny and bright. I also wanted it to feel like a normal family outing photo.

This is a picture of the accommodation i stay at. Once again i didn’t edit this picture of the same reasons as the previous photo. I wanted it to look natural and majestic, by getting the low angled shot, to make it look taller. I made sure i took this picture on the corner so we can see down the left and right sides of the building to show its enormity.

Stranger

This is a picture of a stranger in my town called Robert. I took a stroll on the outskirts of the town where i came across a small garage, and inside was a man doing some metal work. I approached him and told him who i was a what i was doing, and he happily agreed to let me take his picture. I took this photo on an Olympus digital camera. I used the light from the garage door and made him stand at a certain angle so the light would reflect of him to how i want it. I also used the flash on the camera, as i wanted to light up the area around as i thought it would look more effective in the workshop, and to reveal more of the subjects character. By capturing the stranger whole body I have gone for the same style as Alec Soth. (Soth 2016)

Friend

This is a picture of my flat mate. Once again for my still image i am using Alec Soth’s style of photography. I told my flatmate that i was going to take a picture at any moment on our little hike. The reason i wanted to this was to capture the subject with a fresh expression on her face. i didn’t want their to be time to allow her facial features to relax. I think this picture was successful in capturing these expressions.

Me

This is just a picture of me in my most relaxed state. I like being outdoors in the open air and i think this picture represents me in that way.

This week we got given the task to find 3 objects that all have the same meaning. I went home for the week and took pictures of my great uncle Jack’s WW1 stash. i found an old picture of his grave which is unknown to my family, however we somehow found an image of his gravestone. the most we know is that its somewhere in Belgium. The next picture is of a dead mans penny, this was given to the families of all of the fallen troops who died in WW1. Lastly i found 2 of his medals, the orange ribbon medal was given to all soldiers who fought in the war and the medal on the left was given to mark his bravery in the battle of Ypres.

triptych

Here is the final triptych image i have been working on, i wanted it to have a black and white look as it also emphasizes the fact that these objects are well over 100 years old. The photographer that inspired me take take this style of still image is Vladimir Shipulin (Shipulin 2016). His work is based around old fashioned props. i thought my great uncle’s war stash would make a perfect match for this style of art.

Appropriation

soldier money

Ever since Barrack Obama became president of the USA, gun shares have risen due to the increased threat of terrorism. I wanted to create an image that will tell a story by looking at it. This image simply shows dollar bills flying out of the barrel, in place of the empty shells. I like the way i have kept this image to a minimum by only adding the dollar bills. I have managed to keep the image consistent by pairing up the dollar currency with the USA flag on the soldiers shoulder.

creating world

This image shows the creation of the earth from a religious point of view. The hand belongs to God who is creating the world in detail with just a paintbrush. The only criticism i have with this image is that i wish the comet went around the opposite side of the planet instead of going behind the hand. However, i couldn’t horizontally mirror the hand to the opposite side as it didn’t look as effective and by enlarging it will cut too much detail of the hand.

einstein ice cream

This image i designed is purposely for a marketing use for walls ice cream. I’ve taken the famous image of Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out and made it look as though he is licking the ice cream. The image can give multiple meaning such as, Walls ice cream was around when Albert Einstein lived, and Walls ice cream is that popular, even famous people enjoy it.
